Electrical Tip: What is a GFCI?

GFCI stands for – ground fault circuit interrupter. GFCi’s are to be installed within six feet of a water source, in garages or unfinished basements, kitchen countertops and outdoors. They are intended to prevent electrocutions (in wet surroundings) and injuries from faulty equipment.

Even though these devices have prevented many injuries they are often a homeowner’s biggest headache. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends testing GFCI receptacles monthly by using the test button on the receptacle. If a receptacle is not working the unit should be reset using the reset button on the receptacle. You will often find a GFCI tripped after a storm.

Also, did you know that you can buy GFCI-protected extension cords. These are great for pumps, outdoor equipment, tools, etc. and are available at the big box stores.

For more information on GFCI protection visit the CPSC’s fact sheet on GFCI’s at https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/099_0.pdf
